New Polymer £50 Note Enters Circulation Today

New Polymer £50 Note Enters Circulation Today

The new polymer £50 note has entered circulation today (Wednesday 23rd June), featuring the scientist Alan Turing.

ACS is urging retailers to ensure that they aware of the notes’ security features as it begins to be used by customers.

The polymer £50 note contains advanced security features, including:

  • Hologram - the word changes between ‘Fifty’ and ‘Pounds’ when the note is tilted
  • See-through window – look at the metallic image over the main window and check that the foil is gold and green on the front of the note and silver on the back
  • Ultra-violent number - under ultraviolet light, the number ‘50’ appears in bright red and green, against a duller background

The full list of security features can be found here.

The withdrawal date of the paper £50 note will be announced once the new polymer £50 note has been issued.

The Bank of England offers a free Banknote Checking Scheme which is open to businesses and retailers, more information can be found here.

To bring the new note to life, Snapchat has developed a lens which allows the public to see their cash in a new dimension through augmented reality.

  • Simply open the Snapchat app, or download it for free if you don’t have it, then point the camera at the Snapcode
  • Press and hold the Snapcode on your phone screen to unlock the AR Lens
  • Once unlocked, hover over the new £50,
  • Watch as it transforms the polymer note bringing Alan Turing and the Bombe to life! (Remember to have your volume on to hear the sound effects!)

30 September 2022 is the last day of circulation for paper £20 and £50 notes. More information and resources are available here.
