Since the country went into lockdown we have seen biscuit sales soar as people are at home together, drinking more tea and coffee and having a cheeky biscuit to keep up their spirits.

The Coronavirus pandemic has already started to alter the way that consumers shop. This began with shoppers’ strong desire to stock up on essential items, and was followed by a movement towards less frequent, higher-spend shops as consumers across the UK restricted the amount of time spent outside their homes.  

So far, it appears that the convenience channel has benefitted from this change in behaviour – in fact, in March, convenience retailers saw sales soar 30%, compared to the same four weeks in 2019

What our analysis has shown is that most of this growth in demand has been for the nation’s favourite biscuits, for example the No1 best seller, McVitie’s Chocolate Digestives,  has seen sales rise by 75% in the 4 weeks to mid April.  The data shows that pladis has managed to supply over half of the growth in demand for biscuits in the convenience channel as our factories work around the clock to meet the surge in demand.

Also in the time of crisis we are supplying over 1.3 million packs of biscuits to the Government’s critical care packages to reach the country’s most vulnerable groups, and we have so far donated over 3 million biscuits, cakes and snacks to NHS and frontline workers up and down the country, as a gesture of thanks for their incredible efforts.
